03 Jan Things to do in Chicago
Usually I focus on the weekend – hence the company name – but I personally like to get it in early in the week. Mondays and Tuesdays, yeah, some places are closed… but you have a lot of places to yourself. Part of this goes back to my years living in Shanghai, when the subways were jammed packed with tourists on the weekend. So packed that you really didn’t want to go out to a lot of the popular places. So in that spirit, I’ll leapfrog the weekend and go straight to “Things to do in Chicago on a Monday or Tuesday”
Movie fans: AMC Theater has $6 tickets all day on Tuesday! That’s a pretty good deal for a quality movie experience.
Maggie Daley Skating Ribbon is a nice bet early in the week, and it’s free. Up the hill on Randolph, kinda tucked in behind the Pritzker Pavillon, is where you’ll find Maggie Daley Skating Ribbon. Ice skating is a limited time only kind of thing, so add a little color to your winter and hit the ice!
What about the tunes? Well, Tuesdays at 3:45 PM, the very awesome Rockefeller Chapel offers up Tea and Pipes. University of Chicago organist Thomas Weisflog and selected students and guests play classical music at this free event. If you haven’t been to the University of Chicago, get theeself there post-haste. There is something looming, comforting, and more than a bit Gothic (in the best of ways) about hearing a concert at the Rockefeller Chapel.
As always, the Chicago Loop is a good place to get your stroll on. Have you ever actually completely walked the famous Loop? Me neither… but if I did, I’d stop at Oasis Café at 21 N. Wabash. It’s in the back of a jewelry store, which makes it sound like some manufactured cool hipster hideaway. It is not. It is just a good, no frills place to get falafel, hummus, shawarma, and a few other tasty treats. They close at 5;30, but other than that, solid!
With that, we conclude our first post of 2020. Hope yours is a good one!
